Balerno’s Fairtrade Group has for years worked to educate us and to promote Fair Trade. There are many facets to their work and the efforts have been recognised as being so effective that Balerno has been announced as the Fairtrade Foundation’s FT Community of the month for June ’21! All the more cheering in that this isn’t an award that the FT group applied for; Balerno was nominated, not only for long commitment, but over this year of ‘mostly virtual’ activity. Much of the credit goes to Jo Khan’s tireless Facebook work which made this happen. More detail there – do look! We’re hoping the award may encourage others to support FT’s aims too.
Jo is now finishing off a ‘Wave of Hope’ that she has organised with the FT Group, this is Balerno’s contribution to a much wider campaign reminding G7 decision-makers of work they urgently need to do toward a greener, fairer world.
Coming next: planting the FT tub in the Main Street, our writing competition over the summer for Balerno High School students, then ‘Great Big Green Week’, 18-26 September, ahead of November’s COP 26.

This award is so richly deserved and comes as no surprise, to those of us who knew how hard you would continue to work, no matter what challenges the Pandemic brought, to ensure the FT Farmers were supported.
We’ve come to think of FT as so much a part of our lives, we take it for granted . But we do know, that but for you and your predecessors, like Jean Barton& Iona Binns to name a few ,this day would not be possible.
