Today is Holy Wednesday and we reflect on what happened during the last meal of Jesus with His disciples.
The Gospel of John tells us in chapter John 13:1-17 that before the meal started, Jesus washed the feet of His disciples.
In those days the host was responsible to provide water for his guests’ feet as a sign of hospitality, like Abraham did in Gen 18:4. But it was never expected of the host to wash the feet of his guests. No – this job would usually be done by the lowest of the lowest, namely a slave.
Jesus took off his outer garment and washed the disciple’s feet, which was a sign of great humility. Jesus practised what He preached. He did not come to be served but to serve. He is indeed the Servant King!
He told His disciples to model His behaviour. They should also serve each other by always being the least! He left them and us with a promise, whenever we act in this selfless way, we will be blessed.
Today, when we wash our hands, we should be thinking of Jesus’ act of sacrificial love. He chose to humiliate Himself on a cross, so that we can LIVE without the heavy burden of sin hanging over our heads.
Let us think of ways how we can help and serve one another in this time of isolation due to Covid-19. On a practical way, to illustrate what Jesus did, take a container of water, soap and a towel, and wash someone’s hands or feet (if you are brave!). If you are on your own, wash your own hands or feet and remind yourself what Jesus did for you….
