Spiritual exercise 5 May 2020

Is it any wonder that Samuel ran to Eli three times before he recognised the voice of God?  Samuel was young, taken away from his mother and family to live in a ramshackle public building with an old man whose own sons were notorious ne’er do wells.  In these strange and unsettling times, the boy turned to the only person in his adoptive household that may be able to guide him.  What wisdom allowed Eli not to comfort and guide the child but instead direct him to speak with God himself? 

In all the tumult of life, how often do we speak to God direct about our troubles, our hopes and our fears?  Do we instead turn to others to tell us what to do, how to act and what to believe?  Do we believe in a God who is willing, able and present to speak with us individually? Take a moment to reflect and understand that God stands before us, calling our name, being with us all in our times of hope and fear.  Speak and listen to Him, for he is there for you.
